Pulsecom Quadruples Central Office Test Capacity: Stage One Network Control Interface

At last there's a highly reliable replacement for the manufacture discontinued Western Electric® (WECo) J1P033AL-1L1 Network Control Interface Unit! Recognizing persistent demand from operating companies who utilize the older WECo units as a simple and inexpensive means of quadrupling Central Office test head capacity, Pulsecom -- leading innovators in the telecommunications equipment design and development arena -- today announced the availability of its J1P033AL-1L1 Stage One Network Interface Control Unit. The Pulsecom unit, which has been optimized with reliable sealed relays and connectorized printed circuit board construction, is an exact replacement for the Western Electric® J1P033AL-1L1 Stage One Network Control Interface Unit (SMC5F00A).

Stage One Distribution Network (S1DN) equipment is frequently used in the Central Office (CO) to permit efficient access between an office test head and multiple Switched Maintenance Access System (SMAS) test ports. Because standard S1DN systems can only accommodate up to 9600 circuits, a single S1DN system (or "quad") is usually insufficient to meet the demands of larger COs. In these situations, the J1P033AL-1L1 is used to increase capacity via a simple cable connection to existing S1DN equipment, enabling a single test head to access the test ports of up to 38,400 circuits (or up to 76,800 DUAL D4 circuits).

While the Western Electric® J1P033AL-1L1 Stage One Network Control Unit offers an ideal solution for CO expansion, its use has created serious challenges. First, because the units were manufacture discontinued, operating companies have been forced to continually cannibalize or rearrange existing equipment, or purchase "reconditioned" Western Electric® Network Control Interface Units. Persistent demand has depleted existing J1P033AL-1L1 supplies, making them increasingly more difficult to acquire. Second, the original Western Electric¨ units used open frame relays that are fragile and prone to contamination, thus corrupting network, testing and maintenance efforts. Fortunately, Pulsecom's optimized J1P033AL-IL1 Stage One Network Interface Control Units offer a comprehensive solution to both of these challenges.

In keeping with its long-standing commitment to seamless deployment and integration, the Pulsecom J1P033AL-1L1 unit is designed as a mechanical and electrical drop-in replacement for the old Western Electric® units -- the pin outs, connector names and locations, and even the mounting holes are identical. Unlike the original Western Electric® units, however, the optimized Pulsecom J1P033AL-1L1 utilizes highly reliable sealed relays and connectorized printed circuit board construction, as well as heavy-duty mechanical construction to eliminate test corruption and maintenance troubles caused by the old open frame relays and hundreds of wire wrap connections. So, whether expanding S1DN central office capacity, or as a reliable upgrade for older, unreliable Western Electric® J1P033AL-1L1 units currently in the network, the Pulsecom J1P033AL-1L1 Stage One Network Interface Control Unit is now the product of choice.
